What will you be doing?

This role covers four key areas that will form the successful candidate’s core daily responsibilities.

Safety

Lead the delivery of a safe, compliant operation for employees, customers and third parties.

Promote a strong safety culture through inspections, monitoring, engagement and competence management.

Manage staff competence cycles, assessments, training plans and trainee development.

Investigate incidents and hazards, implement corrective actions and produce reports.

Act as first-line on-call, managing incidents, site safety and operational continuity.

Ensure local compliance, inductions, contractor management and audit support.


People

Recruit, onboard and develop employees, ensuring welfare, wellbeing and fitness for duty.

Manage absence, discipline, medical compliance and HR processes in partnership with HR.

Promote equality, diversity, inclusion and positive union engagement.

Support employee development, succession planning, reward and retention.


Service Delivery & Profitability

Deliver safe, reliable customer services, managing resources, disruption and performance.

Support contract reviews, new business acceptance and customer engagement.

Improve profitability through flow reviews, business cases and cost control.

Manage training delivery to ensure operational competence and customer requirements are met.

Oversee budgets, locations, property matters and seasonal operations.


Further Requirements

Provide cross-cover for Operations Managers and deputise for Regional Operations Managers.

Collaborate across departments and manage fatigue and working time.

What are we looking for? 

Essential Qualifications & Certifications

IOSH qualification or equivalent.

Personal Track Safety (PTS).

First Aid certification.

Fire Precautions Manager certification.

NVQ Level 3 Assessor qualification.

Trainer / Instructor qualification.


Rail Operations & Safety Competence

Train Driver competence (required for versatile Operations Managers).

Ground Staff competence.

Rail Safety Incident (RSI) competence.

Site Operator competence.

Knowledge of rail industry health and safety standards.


Management, Compliance & Professional Skills

Accident investigation and reporting.

Risk management.

Environmental management.

Project management.

Employment law knowledge.

Non-technical skills (NTS).

Presentation and interviewing skills.
